In 1881 Census was living at 17 Ross Street, Stoke Damerel,Devon and working as a Joiner. Believe later left home and worked at Woolwich Arsenal, London before joining Royal Engineers.

Joined Royal Engineers 18/3/1887 as a Sapper (Army No. 21828). Army form shows he had served carpenters apprenticeship with R.D. Rowe of Stoke Damerel. Originally signed up for 7 years service.

Signed up for extension of service to 12 years on 9/12/1894.
Promoted to Sergeant 1/4/1896

Demoted to Sergeant "for inefficiency" 12/5/1889.
Discharged from Army at Chatham, Kent 6/7/1899 (from 7th Company R.E.) - intended residence 117 Brittain Street, New Brompton.

Re-enlisted to Royal Engineers at Chatham 20/3/1900 (new Army No. 5121) - rank of Sergeant. Address then was 11 Longfellow Road, New Brompton.
Re-enlisted again 19/3/1901 whilst at Curragh Camp, Co. Kildare, Ireland. Service from 20/3/1900 to 18/3/1901 shown as being under Army Order 48 of 1900.

Discharged to pension at Aldershot 9/10/1905 (from 7th Field Company R.E.) with a gratuity of 2-0-0. Total service of 17 years 315 days. Intended address of "Appleton", Park Road, Farnborough, Hants.

All Army service shown as Home except served in Bermuda from 30/11/1902 to 20/04/1904. Reference always show "Exemplary" conduct and record him as a "very superior carpenter".

Height 5ft 6in, Weight 161 pounds, Complexion ruddy or fair, Hair Brown, Eyes Hazel (later Grey). Religion Wesleyan.

At time of wife's death in 1916 was living at Upper Pinewood Road, Ash, Surrey. During mid-1920's lived at Gole Road, Pirbright, Surrey two doors from No2. where Ruby Stonard (son William's wife) was living.
Lived with son William H.G. and wife from their marriage in 1928, firstly at Star Lane, Ash, Surrey then at Wyke Avenue, Ash (mid-1930's) and then at 2 Petworth Villas, Guildford Road, Ash until about 1950.
Then went to live with daughter Vera and family (probably at Bailes Lane, Normandy, Guildford, Surrey) until his death.
